HISPANIC STATE LEGISLATORS CALL UPON THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO GRANT TEMPORARY PROTECTED IMMIGRATION STATUS (TPS) TO UNDOCUMENTED HAITIANS RESIDING IN THE U.S.

Washington, DC – In the wake of one of the Western Hemisphere’s most devastating natural disasters, The National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) calls upon the Obama administration to grant Haitians residing in the U.S., Temporary Protected Status (TPS) while Haitian relief efforts take place.

“The calamity facing Haiti has left tens of thousands dead and many more without basic services, food or water. The most Humane action would be to grant Haitians residing in the U.S. without documentation, a temporary opportunity to find dignified work and legally support their families while rescue and reconstruction ensues. We urge Department of Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano to exercise her authority to grant Haitians meaningful asylum and relief from deportation during this great tragedy, said Hon. Iris Martinez (IL.), NHCSL President.“
