NHCSL STATEMENT ON SB 1070 CHALLENGE
WASHINGTON, D.C., July 6, 2010 – The National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) commends the U.S. Department of Justice for challenging Arizona’s SB 1070. NHCSL stands with the people of Arizona in defending all of its citizens’ rights to live free of violence – including the thousands of Hispanics living along the border in fear of attacks, kidnappings and similar dangers. But S.B. 1070 is misguided and potentially damaging to civil and Human rights, and will have a chilling effect on crime reporting and deter resources from local law enforcement.
“Arizona and America needs a national immigration policy to stop the developing patchwork of local and state laws carrying dramatic economic and civil right consequences, said Senator Iris Y. Martinez, NHCSL President. We once again call upon Arizona to join in the national call for comprehensive immigration reform in order to strengthen border security and solve this ongoing national issue.
NHCSL members have worked consistently in calling for comprehensive immigration reform that includes strengthened border security, a pathway to citizenship for over 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the shadows, and an end to the abuse of workers by unscrupulous employers.
