NHCSL Condemns Violence By
Los Angeles Police
Washington,
DC -- Assemblyman Felix Ortiz (NY), president of
the National Hispanic Caucus of State
Legislators (NHCSL) issued the following
statement regarding the violent tactics used by
Los Angeles police against marchers at the May
Day Rally on May 1.
“The inexcusable force that the Los Angeles
police used on the marchers at the May Day Rally
must be fully investigated immediately. Most of
the marchers were immigrant and were assaulted
by the LA police. The behavior of the Los
Angeles police must be condemned and those
officers who took part in the assaults must be
held accountable for their actions.
In the 21st century we should be able to allow
civilized rallies to occur without bringing in
the element of violence that accompanied the
civil rights rallies of the 1960’s. If we do not
learn from history, we will be doomed to repeat
it.
I strongly urge that the City of Los Angeles
fully investigate these actions with urgency.
Those who marched to acknowledge the
significance of May Day were there in solidarity
and peace. The LA Police failed to use restraint
and instead assaulted the peaceful marchers of
children and families.”
