Participates at National Latino Congreso
Los Angeles,
CA – Today, Assemblyman Felix Ortiz (NY),
President of the National Hispanic Caucus of
State Legislators (NHCSL) joined business and
health experts on a panel to discuss “Strategies
for Greater Access to Healthcare for Minorities,
Immigrants and the Poor” at the National Latino
Congreso.
Participants at the gathering included
representatives from community organizations,
labor and business community, religious groups,
student organizations, environmental, health and
community development groups.
In his remarks Assemblyman Ortiz highlighted
NHCSL’s efforts to address the health
disparities in the Hispanic community and the
role that Hispanic leaders can take to improve
the quality of life for the communities we serve.
“Our communities are way behind when it comes to
our health status,” said Assemblyman Ortiz. “As
leaders and policymakers, we must continue to
work together and with vigilance to change these
results.”
Other speakers on the panel included: Jose J.
Gonzalez, President/CEO, Cambridge Business
Advisors; Dr. David Hayes-Bautista, UCLA Center
for the Study of Latino Health and Culture;
Fernando Losado, California Nurses Association;
Lupe Alonso-Diaz, Latino Coalition for a Healthy
California; and Martin Gallegos, California
Hospital Association.
The National Latino Congreso is The National

for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), the
League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC),
the Mexican American Legal Defense and
Educational Fund (MALDEF), the National Alliance
of Latin American and Caribbean Communities (NALACC),
the National Hispanic Environmental Council (NHEC),
Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP),
the William C. Velasquez Institute (WCVI), and
Earth Day Network (EDN).
